It’s not just about not hitting your children, but the choices you make as well. Gentle parenting has become more popular in recent years. We spoke to an expert, as well as parents who observe this style, to get an insight into it.

“Gentle parenting offers parents the opportunity to connect with their children on all levels, but especially on an emotional level,” says Professor Nicolette Roman, a SARChI Chair in Human Capabilities, Social Cohesion and the Family at the University of the West -Capeland.

“Every behavior is a communication between the parent and the child. So when the child has a stress reaction, the parent must try to understand the underlying issue, which is often a need. [not a want] of a child,” adds Roman.
